When it comes to looking after our hearing, earwax is something we don’t often think about — until it becomes a problem!
But did you know that earwax actually plays an important role in keeping our ears healthy?
Why do we have earwax?
Earwax is completely natural and helps protect our ears by trapping dust, dirt and bacteria, while keeping the delicate skin inside the ear canal lubricated.
In most cases, our ears are pretty good at looking after themselves, with earwax naturally working its way out. However, sometimes it can build up and cause problems.
Signs you might have a build-up of earwax
Excessive earwax can cause a number of symptoms, including:
- Muffled hearing or temporary hearing loss
- A blocked or full feeling in the ears
- Discomfort, itching or earache
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Occasionally, dizziness
These symptoms aren’t always caused by earwax, so it’s important to have your ears checked rather than assume there’s a blockage.
Why professional earwax removal matters
It can be tempting to reach for a cotton bud when your ears feel blocked, but this can actually push wax further into the ear canal and potentially cause damage.
At Halo Hearing Solutions, our fully trained clinicians use specialist equipment to examine your ears and, where necessary, safely remove troublesome earwax.
Our preferred method is microsuction, which uses gentle suction to remove excess wax. In some cases, warm water irrigation may also be recommended.
